Heritage tour

During their visit, the students explore the battlefield, the National Monument and the Historial with the help of a themed booklet.

They discover the many traces of the Hartmannswillerkopf’s designation as a heritage site and learn how this place of remembrance, originally designed to honour French soldiers in the aftermath of the Great War, has today become a symbol of Franco-German friendship.

It is possible to take a guided tour of the entire site focusing on this theme.

Multisensory kit

The multisensory kit offers a fun and interactive insight into the daily lives of soldiers at Hartmannswillerkopf during the First World War.

Through the stories of Charles, a soldier writing to his wife Sophie and his daughter Emma, pupils use their senses and teamwork to solve puzzles involving logic, message decoding and Morse code.

Once the challenges have been completed, they take part in a final test involving their sense of smell, hearing, touch and sight to gather the clues needed to open a mysterious chest.

Teaching App

A bilingue (French-German) teaching app for touch tablets is now available. The "1914-1918 Stories" app is designed to provide both eye-catching and appealing conundrums around both the permanent and temporary exhibitions. Completely bilingual, this app allows Franco-German classes to explore and experiment together. The pupils are asked questions and puzzles as they explore the Historial.

This app is another teaching aid, along with the educational booklets, that is particularly aided for primary and secondary school pupils. About forty touch tablets are available for visitors or, alternatively, the app can also be downloaded to your own tablets before your visit.

Teaching Aids

Our teaching aids allow you to find out many aspects of Hartmannswillerkopf before, during and after your visit. They are primarily focussed on primary and secondary school pupils, available in French and German and adapted to the different school curriculums of both respective countries.

Three aspects are presented: The Franco-German Historial, the National Monument and the battlefield. Six themes are also discussed: the context of the First World War, mountain warfare, the battle of HWK, studying the Great War, field studying the artifacts and Franco-German relations.
