CMNHWK Centenary

Centenary of the creation of the CMNHWK !

10 April 2024

10 April 1924 is a historic date: the official founding of the Comité du Monument National du Hartmannswillerkopf (CMNHWK). It was founded on the initiative of General Tabouis, commander of an Alpine hunter brigade on the mountain during the Great War and commander of Mulhouse from 1919. Tabouis was a major player in the remembrance of the site.

For a hundred years now, the CMNHWK has been working to preserve the memory of the battles that took place on the site, and to help keep alive the memory of those who fought there, both French and German.

The heroes of the Great War

Today, our association is working tirelessly to preserve this major site of the Great War. In 2017, the first Franco-German Historial of the Great War, inaugurated by the Presidents of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, completed the triptych of memorials formed here by the battlefield, the French military cemetery at Silberloch and the National Monument. It symbolises the peaceful relations between yesterday's enemies, which the association and its successive Presidents have endeavoured to promote in this former theatre of confrontation.

Throughout this anniversary season, we are organising a number of events to celebrate the occasion:

  • 29 April: Ceremony on the esplanade of the Monument National in the afternoon.
  • 28 May: Centenary concert at the Historial.
  • 3 August: Day for the general public, during which we will also commemorate the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War and the 10th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Franco-German Historial.
