The summer season at the Hartmannswillerkopf

We await your visit to the Hartmannswillerkopf with great pleasure! Whether it is for a walk across the former battlefield or a visit to our Franco-German Historial, the HWK will meet your expectations. This season you can especially discover our new special exhibition "100 years of monument protection for the Hartmannswillerkopf".

After a shortened 2020 season due to the Corona pandemic, the 2021 summer season will see the return of the traditional guided tours, as well as a new workshop for children and young people to discover the archaeology of the First World War.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION "Classify it!" 1921-2021: Centenary of the classification of the Hartmannswillerkopf as a Historic Monument.

On 2 February 1921, the Hartmannswillerkopf became the first battlefield of the Great War to be classified as a Historic Monument.

Beyond the administrative negotiations, this exhibition presents the multiple facets of a battlefield after the armistice. The themes are numerous. Tourists and pilgrims rub shoulders, sometimes with difficulty, and various measures are taken to welcome them to the former battlefields.

Through various thematic tables enriched by numerous documents and photographs, often unpublished, this exhibition endeavours to present the major stages that marked the transformation of this battlefield into a major site of the First World War.
